I have basically narrowed down my list of problems. I ran a lead directly from the positive on the(new) battery to the distributor. This had no noticeable effect on spark. I also confirmed that my carb has gas, as evidenced that the throttle shoots a spray of gas into the venturis.
I get pops, bangs, and these horrible squelchy noises, but no catch. In short, i have no idea what is wrong now.

sounds like your timing is 180° off - spark plug # 1 take it out, crank it over to ensure it is on the compression stroke, then verify the rotor (under the distributor cap) is pointing at the #1 spark plug wire on the distributor cap, then it’s 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 firing order...

Have you hit it with a large hammer?

Just because you get squirts (accelerator pump) of gas into t he venturis does no t m ean it will fire and idle, that's probably why you have pops and farts. Check to make sure the bowls fill, the floats aren’t stuck and you don’t have shit blocking fuel through the pilot jets.

ya butt it should still fire decently even with that little bit o gas...

or just go do what your dog is doing and work on it later

bad coil?
The distributor doesn’t use 12 volts from the battery, the ignition coil charges up and discharges much higher voltage into the distributor, which then distributes coil voltage to the various spark plug wires in firing order.
A shorted out ignition coil won’t generate enough voltage to jump the spark plug gap reliably, or at all.
Battery voltage, (11-14 volts dc) won’t even come close, and the spark plugs need voltage much more than they need amperage, which the battery does have plenty of. The coil trades amperage for higher voltage, which is what electrical transformers do.

Been there done that, good suggestion!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Disconnect your engine’s main negative battery cable with a wrench.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Pull the main ignition coil wire, the one that leads to the distributor, off the coil. Disconnect the small grounding wire, attached to the side of the coil, with a wrench.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Turn on the multimeter and set it to the “ohms” function.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Insert one of the multimeter’s probes into the center opening of the coil, contacting the metal terminal inside the coil. Touch the second probe of the meter to the ignition coil’s grounding terminal. The meter should read 6,000 to 15,000 ohms. If it does not, the coil’s secondary winding is faulty.
Remove meter’s probe from the center terminal and touch it to the terminal bolt on the opposite side of the coil from the probe touching the grounding terminal. The meter should read between approximately 0.4 and 2 ohms. If it does not, the coil’s primary winding is faulty.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
If the coil checks out test the main coil wire, that was removed from the distributor, for shorts. Set the multimeter to the “continuity” setting and insert one probe into each end of the wire. If the meter does not show any reading, or fluctuates, the wire needs to be replaced.

It was this. Goddamn machine shop put my dizzy on 180

This may sound crazy, but is your distributor 180deg out? It’s a huge and common mistake with people building pontiac engines, it may also be common for your olds block? People accustomed to building chevy motors get it wrong almost every time.

The machine shop did that and didn’t tell me.

I still say hit it, just with a smaller hammer. To be safe.
